Why would I start counselling?

People often seek the help of a counsellor when they feel overwhelmed by a problem or life event. This could be because what has happened is particularly traumatic or sudden or it could be that your difficulty has been going on for a long time and you feel now is the time to do something about it. Maybe you’re stuck in a pattern of thinking or behaviour that you can’t seem to find a way out of by yourself.

You may have had counselling in the past that you didn’t feel was a good fit for you but that doesn’t mean that trying out a new relationship with a new counsellor won’t give you a better result.

Whether you’ve had lots of counselling in the past or whether it’s completely new to you, feel free to contact me to find out more.

Who is counselling for?

Counselling is for everyone. According to a recent survey by the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) almost a third of UK adults have had counselling in the past year.

I am qualified to work with adults of 16+ and warmly welcome you whatever your age, gender, background, religion or spiritual beliefs. If you have an additional need that might affect your ability to get the most from our sessions then I encourage you to get in touch so that we can look at ways to accommodate those and give you the best experience of working together.

How will counselling benefit me?

Clients often talk about feeling like they have found themselves again after counselling. When we are experiencing psychological pain, it can feel like our problems occupy all of our time and energy but when that pain lessens, we can begin to put that time and energy back into things we enjoy.

It’s not uncommon to begin our work together by addressing one issue and then to discover – once you gain some confidence – that there are other things you’d like to work on too. That’s fine! Counsellors do not operate a ‘one problem only’ policy. Don’t feel you have to have sorted everything out in your head before you come. You may have a very clear idea of what is hurting or worrying you but equally you might just know that you feel bad and want help in finding out why.

Counselling is not about changing who you are – it is about gaining insights and strategies to help you be the best version of you.

What my clients say about how counselling has helped them -

‘My struggle with addiction had taken control of my life. Counselling gave me a whole new perspective on my drives and a raft of techniques to help me address my behaviours.’

‘My anxiety was exhausting me. Now I feel so much lighter and like life can be enjoyed again. I wish I’d started therapy years ago.’

‘Just being in a space where we could get a new perspective on our relationship issues without judgement was a revelation. Every couple should get therapy!’
